Things that annoyed Brian

24 May 06 - 12:59Mass email and complaints

The subject line read "Discounted Tickets For Tim McGraw/Faith Hill", and it was sent from Athletics . I really should just send all messages from that address to /dev/null, as the messages are never anything more than advertisements. Normally they are just announcements of when tickets go on sale for the school sports teams (more specifically they are normally only ads for football and men's hockey and basketball teams). This one however was blatantly advertising for an outside commercial interest. The only tie it had to the UW was that the concert was being held at the Kohl Center

My best guess is that the amount the concert organizer pays for the space is dependant upon the number of tickets sold, and the Athletics department wished to get a few more tickets sold.

As the email appears to be a pretty clear violation of the Appropriate Use Guildelines for IT Resources, I filed a few complaints. First with the UW abuse team and for good measure, with the state Legislative Audit Bureau. Not that I expect anything to come of the complaints as the Athletics department gets exceptions for pretty much anything they wish.

Follow the more link to see the actual email. (more)

19 May 06 - 22:32Stinky dryer sheets

Kathleen and I were at the supermarket today looking for fabric softener. The first thing we notice is that they don't have a single bottle of original scent or stink free from the three brands they carry. Above the fabric softener were boxes of Bounce dryer sheets. On those boxes was a five level "Scent Meter". The store was selling Bounce that had stinky ratings of 1-4. They were not selling the original scent (we have not seen it in stores in many months), nor were they selling Bounce Free (which has no odor in theory).

We can't possibly be the only consumers that desire products that are not overtly smelly? It is clear we aren't the only ones, as nearly every company that introduces "NEW, fabulous scent" versions of their products also release a "Free" version without any scent. Seriously, do people really like to have their nostrils assaulted by varied smells as they go to various areas of their house? Is it so much to ask for household cleaners that are not overely odiferous and dissipate quickly?

19 May 06 - 22:05Feed buttons

While adding those images the web-designer/editor had to have thought to himself "Is this too many add feed buttons? Nah".

Damn Web 2.0, may it die a death like the first internet bubble. Ok, maybe not quite such a dramatic crashing and burning of the tech sector, but may it just die.

Instead of the perfectly clear "suicide bomber," "suicide murderer," or "suicide killer", he's created a linguistic trainwreck.  At best a murdercider is some sort of murder-killer.  At worst it's some sort of fruit juice made from a killing. --Alan
